چکیده

18 This work describes the morphology of the sperm cell of Maja brachydactyla, with emphasis on 19 localizing actin and tubulin. The spermatozoon of M. brachydactyla is similar in appearance and 20 organization to other brachyuran spermatozoa. The spermatozoon is a globular cell composed of 21 a central acrosome, which is surrounded by a thin layer of cytoplasm, and a cup-shaped nucleus 22 with four radiating lateral arms. The acrosome is a subspheroidal vesicle composed of three 23 concentric zones surrounded by a capsule. The acrosome is apically covered by an operculum. 24 The perforatorium penetrates the center of the acrosome and has granular material partially 25 composed of actin. The cytoplasm contains one centriole in the subacrosomal region. A 26 cytoplasmic ring encircles the acrosome in the subapical region of the cell and contains the 27 structures-organelles complex (SO-complex), which is composed of a membrane system, 28 mitochondria with few cristae, and microtubules. In the nucleus, slightly condensed chromatin 29 extends along the lateral arms, in which no microtubules have been observed. Chromatin fibers 30 aggregate in certain areas and are often associated to the SO-complex. During the acrosomal 31 reaction, the acrosome could provide support for the penetration of the sperm nucleus, the SO32 complex could serve as an anchor point for chromatin, and the lateral arms could play an 33 important role triggering the acrosomal reaction, while slightly decondensed chromatin may be 34 necessary for the deformation of the nucleus. 35

Effect of Helium-Neon Laser Irradiation on Motility and Ultrastructure of Fresh and Frozen-Thawed Human Sperm

Purpose: Semen freezing is an important technique in human infertility treatment in many different patients but it damages sperms. Low-power lasers are physical agents that have biostimulatory effects. In this study, low-power helium-neon laser's (16J/cm2, one time irradiation) effect on motility and ultrastructure of fresh and frozen-thawed human sperm were studied. Materials and Methods: Thi...

Ultrastructure of spermatozoa of Orsolobidae (Haplogynae, Araneae) with implications on the evolution of sperm transfer forms in Dysderoidea.

Haplogynae are highly diverse with respect to the primary male genital system and sperm characteristics. Additionally, all sperm transfer forms (STF) known for spiders are present. Besides individually transferred sperm (cleistospermia), sperm are transferred as conjugates, both primary (synspermia) and secondary sperm conjugates (coenospermia, rouleaux) occur. Nevertheless, the ultrastructure ...

The Effect of Chronic Spinal Cord Injury on Ultrastructure of Epididymal Sperm in Rat

Purpose: The effects of chronic SCI on ultrastructure of spermatozoa aspirated from epididymis of rats. Materials and Methods: 45 adults Wistar rats were divided into 3 groups of SCI, control and sham. Following laminectomy, SCI was induced with a 15g weight dropped from a distance of 10 cm, onto exposed dura matter at T10 level. Sham group underwent laminectomy of T10 only, while control was n...

Spider Movement, UV Reflectance and Size, but Not Spider Crypsis, Affect the Response of Honeybees to Australian Crab Spiders

According to the crypsis hypothesis, the ability of female crab spiders to change body colour and match the colour of flowers has been selected because flower visitors are less likely to detect spiders that match the colour of the flowers used as hunting platform. However, recent findings suggest that spider crypsis plays a minor role in predator detection and some studies even showed that poll...

Species–specific crab predation on the hydrozoan clinging jellyfish Gonionemus sp. (Cnidaria, Hydrozoa), subsequent crab mortality, and possible ecological consequences

Here we report a unique trophic interaction between the cryptogenic and sometimes highly toxic hydrozoan clinging jellyfish Gonionemus sp. and the spider crab Libinia dubia. We assessed species-specific predation on the Gonionemus medusae by crabs found in eelgrass meadows in Massachusetts, USA. The native spider crab species L. dubia consumed Gonionemus medusae, often enthusiastically, but the...
